Dead Weight 02:29
Dead Weight Lyrics by Brendan Halpin They called me to the office and showed me a graph Said we're gonna have to rightsize the staff The last twenty years have really been great But we've gotta make some cuts and you're dead weight You're dead weight You're dead weight I went home, my stuff was in a box on the floor She said, “you’re too old” and she showed me the door She said, “the last eight years have been really great But I found somebody new and you're dead weight” You're dead weight – I’m dead weight You're dead weight – I’m dead weight <Face Melting Guitar Solo> She took the house and the SUV The only thing I got left is me Everything I worked for in my life The promotion, the house, and the trophy wife It's all dead weight, it’s dead weight

Leech 01:56
Leech Lyrics by Karl Meyer Your friend the leech called me up yesterday She asked me if I had some money to play It was all I could do to get her off the line Another leech without any spine Oh- and I don’t have the time Back at the dive I’m making ends meet Finally found a drummer who nails this beat Got no patience for folks who don’t smile No taste in music and no sense of style Yeah- I’ll see you after a while I’m moving on from this scene, you see Broke those bonds baby I’m a little more free There will be leeches in the very next town But don’t worry about me, I know up from down Oh, unfriend me now Look out for those leeches, but don’t worry about ‘em, just keep movin’ on
4.
Still Angry 02:24
Still Angry Lyrics by Karl Meyer Gotta kiss ass just to stay employed Stifle my anger, and don't get annoyed One of these days I'm gonna get the guts Gonna kick my boss right in the nuts Still angry after all these years – still angry! I’m still angry after all these years The bills pile up every day Wanna chuck 'em on the fire and make 'em go away Might not be so hard to handle that jerk If I got equal pay for my equal work Still angry after all these years – still angry! I’m still angry after all these years Plastic people with fake smiles everywhere They pretend to, but they really don't care There's never been a better time than this To tell you that I still don't give a shit Still angry after all these years – still angry! I’m still angry after all these years
5.
Detractors 02:30
Detractors Lyrics by Karl Meyer Here's a note to my detractors Near and far You think you found a hiding place I know where you are Watch your back, she warned me There’ll be a turn of the screw Never let them know Who’s fooling who I’m from the land of the flying pig Never tell me my dreams are too big Evil mothers try to trick me All is well But don’t cross my path I’ve got a license to kill
6.
Next Year’s Lover Lyrics by Karl Meyer This year ain't been so good for you That jerk -- he hit you with his shoe But now, baby, don't you fear Your luck will change in the New Year I'm next year's lover! (He's next year's lover!) You think your love has gotten stale That's because you had the wrong male But next year we'll straighten this out My love will erase all your doubts I'm next year's lover! (He's next year's lover!) Father Time ain't got nothin' on me See, I just joined AARP My love is the best solution It’s time to make your resolution I'm next year's lover! (He's next year's lover!)

Mirror 02:02
Mirror Lyrics by Karl Meyer I look at my reflection What do I see? An instance of perfection! Looking back at me Objects in the mirror Are closer than they appear Don’t come too close My image comes through strong I ain’t no rehash But I won’t be here long Objects in the mirror Are closer than they appear I can’t look away The mirror’s laughing at me I thought that we were friends My mind is broken, you see Objects in the mirror Are closer than they appear
8.
Veneer 01:37
Veneer Lyrics by Karl Meyer Sitting there with your plastic face Opaque to the human race I'm not fooled like others are You fake a smile every day while While you just say what they want you to say You’ll become completely clear when I peel off your veneer I’m gonna peel off your veneer, I’m gonna peel off your veneer You’re always quick with a witty remark Your real self is in the dark I can read you like a book You think that mask is here to stay? Well, pretty soon I'll peel it away You’ll become completely clear when I peel off your veneer I’m gonna peel off your veneer, I’m gonna peel off your veneer Your facade has disappeared It turns out you’re really not weird Your surface has degraded You really scuffed up your knees Yeah, it’s time for you to see You’ll become completely clear when I peel off your veneer I’m gonna peel off your veneer, I’m gonna peel off your veneer
9.
Rehash 01:37
Rehash Lyrics by Brendan Halpin Baby let's talk it over That’s what you always say And so we talk it over and over Each and every goddamn day Rehash, rehash Talk about it again & again You wanna tell me about my flaws And all the ways I let you down You wanna tell me what I did wrong Every time you come around Rehash, rehash Talk about it again & again I know exactly what you want When I see your name on my phone When I die I know you'll cry ‘Cos you can’t carve this shit on my tombstone Rehash, rehash Talk about it again & again

Career Ending Move Lyrics by Karl Meyer They almost pushed Larry to the brink With that performance-improvement double-think But he went out in a flame of glory Wrote his own ending to the story, he said You’re damn right I’ve got a point to prove There’s nothing left that I can lose I got a lit match next to the fuse And here’s my latest career ending move Let’s give it up for my friend Jane Her husband tried to take her kid away But his fancy lawyer wasn’t so hot She kicked her habit, she took all he’s got, she said You’re damn right I’ve got a point to prove There’s nothing left that I can lose I got a lit match right next to the fuse And here’s my latest career ending move Why kick yourself when the problem ain’t you? Why just sit there and get screwed? Why try to stop them when there’s no end? Why mourn a death when there’s revenge? Steve was smart, so is it any wonder? The slightest misstep was deemed a blunder But he got better of circumstance Walking right out was his best chance, to say You’re damn right I’ve got a point to prove There’s nothing left that I can lose I got a lit match right next to the fuse And here’s my latest and very, very greatest career ending move

about

Not many pre-teens in Cincinnati in the late 1970’s were exposed to the nascent sounds of the local punk and underground scene which included such now-legendary outfits as The Customs, The Verbs, and The Ed Davis Band. At that time, however, the lines were blurred between the music and art scenes, and Karl’s mother was the Curator at the Contemporary Arts Center. Tagging along with his mother to art openings and gallery parties featuring music and performance art, Karl was inspired to pick up the guitar and the bass and start making his own music.

As a sophomore in high school, Karl co-founded the hardcore punk outfit Sluggo, whose 8-song Contradiction E.P. (1983) is still regarded as a genuine article of DIY midwestern thrash from the glory days before heavy metal invaded the genre. Despite his young age, Karl earned a local reputation as a solid, fast bassist and was soon sought after by established bands SS-20 and The Edge who were looking to upgrade their sound. By the time he left town for college in 1986, Karl had performed dozens of gigs at the legendary Jockey Club in Newport, Kentucky, recorded six records, and co-founded the notorious Human Zoo.

After moving to Chicago in the 1990’s, Karl started his second musical career as a hustling, bass-playing sideman in the local blues scene, performing with many legendary artists including Little Mac Simmons, Eddie Taylor, Jr., Tail Dragger, Little Arthur Duncan, Alex “Easy Baby” Randle, Willie Buck, and many others. Along the way, Karl developed an interest in authentic blues harmonica and produced three harmonica blues CDs for established labels Random Chance Records and Wolf Records.

Fast forward to 2015. On a whim, Karl responded to an advertisement for a bass player for a punk band, and within a few months, he found himself writing a fresh batch of songs to perform with his new bandmates Sabrina, Ted, and Nicole. They named the band LC/50, and in 2017, LC/50 released their first E.P., Lovebirds and Lies, available on Bandcamp and many other digital platforms.

A confluence of events -- hitting the 50-year mark, returning to punk, returning to songwriting, and befriending two-time Emmy-winning sound engineer Tim Reisig -- prompted Karl to fulfill a lifelong dream of making his own album, on his own terms, with concessions to no one. The album is called Career Ending Move -- 10 crisp original songs that race past the listener in a brisk 22 minutes. The lyrics for two of the songs (“Dead Weight” and “Rehash”) were penned by friend and author Brendan Halpin, who has followed Karl’s career since the Jockey Club days.

On Career Ending Move, for the first time ever, Karl steps up to the microphone to deliver his songs in his own, full-throated voice. Along the way, LC/50 vocalist Sabrina Betancourt joins Karl for four songs, and leads the anthemic “Still Angry”. Karl also brought in two friends from his Chicago blues connections to help tell the story -- vocalist Sandra Lee sings on “Next Year’s Lover” and guitarist Mondo Cortez delivers the face-melting guitar solo on “Dead Weight.” Aside from Mondo’s brief appearance, Karl performs all of the guitar and bass work on the album. Tim Reisig played the drums and organ.

One person who listened to an early version of the album remarked that Career Ending Move is “punk for adults”, a description which nails it. The lyrical themes on Career Ending Move range from scumbag bosses to failed relationships to learning how to deal with the leeches and detractors who try to bring you down. The message is this: life is not over yet, but there’s a lot to reflect upon at this point, so let’s take a few minutes to deliver those reflections now, at top volume.
